Description:

The department of linguistics at Leipzig University seeks to fill three
doctoral positions in the Emmy Noether Research Group “Grammatical Strength in
Prosodic Morphology: Typology and Theory”.

The positions are for three years (research assistant 65%, TVL-13) and the PhD
students have the option to be associated with the graduate school
“Interaction of grammatical building blocks”

The Emmy Noether junior research group “Grammatical Strength in Prosodic
Morphology: Typology and Theory” investigates the hypothesis that the
phonological grammar of human languages is based on elements with gradient
activity; elements can thus be ‘stronger’ or ‘weaker’ for phonological
processes. Different strength-based phenomena in phonology will be
investigated:
- Competition in lexical accent systems,
- Under- and overapplication in tonal morphology (empirical focus:
Otomanguean),
- Morphologically distinct foot templates (empirical focus: Germanic).

Tasks:
- empirical investigation of typological data on grammatical strength in
Prosodic Morphology (focus on lexical accent systems, tonal morphology and
template morphology)
- theoretical analyses of grammatical strength phenomena in theoretical
phonology and morphology

Qualification:
- Master degree in linguistics or related fields
- background in phonology and theoretical linguistics
- interest in theoretical and typological work

Please send your application (German or English) with the usual documents (CV,
